by Leon Pantenburg

On June 7, 1980, I got down to canoe the size of the Mississippi River. On that day, my brother, Michael Pantenburg, sister Karla Pantenburg Moore and pal Alan Johnson left the headwaters of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca, Minnesota and headed downstream.

Karla and Al canoed with Mike and me the primary week. Mike and I continued on for one more 5 weeks and 600 miles to St. Paul, the place Mike departed for residence in Gilbert, Iowa . The remainder of the voyage was a solo.

The take-off crew: Me, Alan Johnson, Michael Pantenburg, Andrew Michalicek and Karla Pantenburg Moore.

The thought behind the journey was to {photograph} and write a guide in regards to the individuals who reside alongside the massive river. My former Iowa State College roommate, Andrew Michalicek sponsored the mission. I completed the manuscript the following yr, however it by no means went anyplace. Some 13 publishers (eventually depend!) rejected the guide. Apparently, no one favored it as a lot as I did! (However Skyhorse publishing and Simon and Schuster  did like my guide Bushcraft Basics!)

My voyage made the quilt of Image journal and in addition bought the middle unfold. Thanks, Jean Trumbo, on your unimaginable images!

Listed here are some pictures from that voyage.
